My latest book is The Great British Dream Factory, published by Allen Lane on 5 October.
A history of our popular culture in the last century, it explores how and why we reinvented ourselves as a cultural superpower after the fall of the British Empire, from the novels of Agatha Christie and J. R. R. Tolkien to the music of the Beatles, Elton John and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and from country house fantasies such as Brideshead Revisited and Downton Abbey to boarding school heroes like James Bond and Harry Potter.
Formerly an academic historian, I have published seven books about British and American history since the Second World War. I am a regular writer for the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times, and have presented numerous documentaries for BBC Two and BBC Radio 4. I am a visiting professor at King's College London.
