My latest book is The Great British Dream Factory, published by Allen Lane. It has been chosen as a Book of the Year in the Sunday Times, Spectator and Mail on Sunday.
A history of our popular culture in the last century, it explores how and why we reinvented ourselves as a cultural superpower after the fall of the British Empire, from the novels of Agatha Christie and J. R. R. Tolkien to the music of the Beatles, Elton John and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and from country house fantasies such as Brideshead Revisited and Downton Abbey to boarding school heroes like James Bond and Harry Potter.
I am the author of seven books about British and American history since the Second World War. I am a regular writer for the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times, and have written and presented numerous documentaries for BBC Two and BBC Radio 4. I used to be a university history lecturer, and am now a visiting professor at King's College London.
